Super MUC super computer
Scientist at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich have placed an order with IBM for massive super computer able of making 3,000,000,000,000,000 calculations per second. The Super MUC’s internal hardware will consist of 14,000 individual Intel Xenon processors and replace the Centere’s current computer. It is estimated that this single new computer can replace the software of over 100,000 individual personal computers.
Cooling a super computer
While the computer engineering hardware and software surrounding the Super MUC is staggering, but not exactly groundbreaking in terms of software or hardware. What is though, is the computer’s unique cooling system. As any one with a computer can tell you, heat is a computer’s biggest enemy. To combat this, computer engineers have developed a complex cooling system to cool the overworked hardware. Pumps send warm water through the computer which cools it, and in turn is used for heating throughout the building.
Super computer uses
Unfortunately the new Super MUC wont be available for use with Call of Duty: Black Ops, this computer will be used for slightly more productive matters. Its will be tasked with running complex software such as simulations of human virus outbreaks or attempts to predict the effects of earthquakes. The Super MUC will also help by using its hyper fast software to compile large amounts of data for issues such as energy and physics.
