F.lux: New Computer Software is Easy on the Eyes July 22, 2010

If you are like me, you probably spend four nights out of the week staying up late on your computer. What they heck are we doing on a laptop computer at 4am? Who knows. The time seems to fly and before we know it the sun is rising and our eyes are burning from staring at a computer screen like a deer in the headlights. Or is that just me? We are not all up late wasting time, some of us, such as web designers, make their living at 4am in front of a computer screen and this issue is a fact of life.
F.Lux software to make your life better
To help us, some nice programmers have developed F.lux. F.lux is a small and simple software add on that makes your computer screen mimic the sun’s patterns. The goal is to help keep your body and mind in sync with the time of day. Moreover, it really saves your eyes when you are up late working on that web design project. Hardware such as your computer’s monitor is programmed to provide a clear vibrant image is important and useful. Yet, maybe at 3am when you are working on that tedious HTML script you don’t need to do it in direct sunlight? According to F.lux, the fact that your PC monitor is so bright can actually cause you to stay up later than you would normally adding even more stress to your eyes and internal clock.
F.Lux software feedback
I downloaded and installed F.lux and, to be honest, it is so non-intrusive that its presence just feels natural. Yes, as the sun goes down around 7:00 pm, your screen slowly dims. Aside from the health advantages, it simply looks nice, particularly if you have a huge flat screen monitor for your computer that lights up the entire room. The program is small, no intrusive and you can easily disable it with a click of your mouse if you want to work with some light or color sensitive software. There are only two improvements I could suggest to the designers of F.lux. First, it doesn’t seem to really be in sync with the sun at all times. It’s currently July in here in Germany and the sun usually does not set until after 10 or even as late as 11. Apparently, someone forget to program that into F.lux because my screen begins to darken around 8:00pm, while it is still full daylight outside. Additionally, the designers say that it does not interfere with computer gaming software. It does affect the way a PC game looks, but I admit, it doesn’t interfere. All in all F.lux is a software add-on that I can really recommend. It sets out to serve a limited and targeted function and succeeds.
