GIMP-free image manipulation software May 17, 2011

Its great finding free software on the web. True, the antivirus software suites you buy are better than their free versions. The program you paid for that automatically backs up your hard drive is superior to the free cloud-based storage options. But in many cases free software programs like iTunes are just about as good at managing music on your computer as any other program. However, while Adobe Photoshop might be the be all end all for photo manipulation software programs, two students from University of California Berkley developed a free image manipulation tool that pretty much sets that standard for free software.

GIMP software
Enter GIMP, if you love photo manipulation and don’t have the funds to install Adobe Photoshop on your computer and Micosoft Paint does not pack enough software punch, GIMP is the answer to your prayers. GIMP uses a windows interface with multiple toolbars Those familiar with Photoshop software will recognize many of the tools and functions such as layers, blending, opacity and channels. Another great thing is that GIMP is small, only taking up a  small about of your computer’s memory. It should be said that this software is not exactly suitable for professionals, its not %100 compatible with all computer programs and does not support all types of photo hardware. Also, some experts have issues with its quality. However, as far as free photo editing software goes, GIMP is tops.

GIMP software development
GIMP was developed as a class project way back in the 1990s, by two UC Berkley students, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis. This program went through a long series of development. While today GIMP is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, this computer software program was part of the GNU project and was developed to work with UNIX systems. GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. You can download it for free here.
