In the final installment of our guide to avoiding common web deign mistakes we address the issue of usability. When it comes to designing a site, the software used can quickly spiral out of control. The mantra has been look at your website from the perspective of a user, and here we cover a range of things to avoid.
Web Design Usability Mistakes
Think about what drives you crazy when you visit a website. Some things, such as slow download times can be limitations of your computer
hardware. Sometimes that can’t be helped. But other things can. The goal is to use web design basics to make the web page as easy to navigate as possible.
Web Design Usability Solutions
In no particular order, here are some things to consider.
- Give the user options: If you have an intro, let the users skip it. You might like the cool intro music to your web design, but maybe the users doesn’t want to hear it. Let the user decide if they want to view your info, listen to your audio file or subscribe to your newsletter.
- Keep the the text to a reasonable level. Plain and simple, people don’t want to red a novel. Break the text up with paragraphs.
Web Design Navigation Issue
- No side scrolling: Scrolling up and down on a web page is natural. However scrolling from side to side is not.
- Consistent navigation: There are many tricks to employing navigation in your web design. The point is, just be consistent and conventional. If your buttons are on the right side, keep them on the right side through the entire web design. It is tempting to use the software to make your web design unique and different. Fine, but keep the navigation conventional.
