Web designers help the disabled November 17, 2010
Posted by martin in : News , trackbackA new initiative led by a popular charity is recruiting web designers to make the internet easier to use for the elderly and disabled.
Web design challenges
In our day to day society, we have made special arrangements for those with special needs. Wheelchair access allows easy entrance to buildings. Almost every public restroom facility has made accommodations for the disabled and there are many elderly-friendly services. But what about the internet? Many disabled and elderly need the resources and software applications available on their computers, but are having difficulty using them.
Web deisgners to the rescue
A UK-based charity has enlisted the help of the web design community in combating this issue. They are asking for 100,000 web design volunteers to review some 250,000 websites. The task of these web designers is to look at these websites and thier software to see if they can be optimized for use by the disabled. The web designers will check things like text size, page layouts, audio files and a wide range of other issues that many of us take for granted.
Citizens Online: Computers for all
The initiative is being led by Citizens Online, a UK charity. Citizens Online’s goal is to bridge the gap between the disabled, elderly and challenged and the technology world. In October of 2010, they hosted Get Online Week and managed to get 30,000 computer users to get online for the first time.
